West Virginia to send Amber Alerts via Text Messages

Charleston, W.V (AP) - West Virginia's Amber Alert System has expanded its ability to notify residents that a child has been abducted.

A dozen national wireless service providers have agreed to distribute test message alerts to West Virginia cell phone users. The service is free, Gov Joe Manchin said Monday.

"Amber Alerts have become a critical tool in our national efforts to protect our children, " the governor said. "I am pleased that West Virginia can be a national leader in the effort to expand the reach of the Amber Alert system, providing more citizens with details and descriptions of a missing child in the precious minutes and hours following a report of an abduction.".

Wireless providers offering the service in West Virginia are Alltel, Carolina West Wireless, Cingular, Cricket Communications, Dobson Cellular Systems, Midwest Wireless, Nextel, Rural Cellular, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless.

Cell phone users can subscribe to the free service at the West Virginia State Police's web site,, by clicking on the Amber Alert Tab and Wireless Amber Alert icon. Users will then be redirected to a secure site.
